Background
The Department of Health Sciences at the University of York, which was voted the top Department in England for Nursing in 2014 in the Guardian league table rankings, understands the need to ensure that all nurses and midwives receive a good grounding in infection prevention and control which they can then apply in their chosen areas of practice.
We are aware of the challenges that students face. Staff and mentors may not promote best practice…bare below the elbows…which is maintained in acute areas, but not adhered to in mental health areas. This is something which we actively discourage and challenge those misconceptions.

Solution
The workbooks give a good generic foundation for the students. The information they receive is both up to date and easy to read. Use of the workbooks encourages individuals to engage with best practice.
Outcome
The workbooks give a consistent reference to help students recognise the importance of infection control principles and practice in all areas to all patients at all times. The Department recommends that students read the workbooks regularly: the workbooks are a good reference for students to keep.
