Poor maintenance of mattresses and their covers may lead to staining of the mattress or inner surfaces of the covers. This damage can promote the growth of micro-organisms. Proper care, maintenance and cleaning of mattresses and covers is essential.
During the Care Quality Commission (CQC) programme of inspections against ‘The Health and Social Care Act 2008’, assessors repeatedly found mattresses contaminated due to a breach in the integrity of the mattress cover.
The following resources have been developed to assist in ensuring the care, maintenance and decontamination of mattresses and covers, thereby helping to reduce the spread of healthcare associated infection.
